Lahore: Pakistan’s mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed, who continues to represent Quetta Gladiators in PSL 10, has decided to part ways with his iconic “head-nodding” wicket celebration. The gesture, which gained popularity after he began using it in earlier editions of the PSL and on international tours, recently came under scrutiny—especially after a high-profile dismissal in a match against India.
Abrar first introduced the celebration style during PSL 9, and he continued it during matches in South Africa without any controversy. However, the celebration sparked backlash during the Champions Trophy when he dismissed Shubman Gill and nodded his head while motioning the batter toward the pavilion. The incident drew criticism, prompting the spinner to reconsider the gesture.
Speaking about his decision, Abrar said, “I started the celebration in the previous PSL and used it in South Africa as well—there were no issues. But the reaction during the Champions Trophy against India was different. I intended to keep the style, but if people are offended, I don’t want to hurt anyone, so I’ve decided to drop it.”
The young spinner also discussed his bowling development, saying he’s been working hard to improve his skills across phases—new ball, middle overs, and death overs. He credits that focus for recent improvements in performance.
Talking about his PSL side, he said, “Quetta Gladiators is a strong team. One win can give us momentum. Having a legend like Vivian Richards around is inspiring—his words hold great value for us.”
Abrar also praised Mark Chapman, highlighting his awareness of local conditions and consistency in scoring runs. He expressed confidence that Chapman will continue delivering strong performances.
Looking ahead, Abrar shared his personal ambitions: “I want to become the best bowler across all three formats. For that, I know my fitness needs to improve, and I’m committed to it. I also realize the importance of contributing with the bat, so in the next six months, I’ll be working hard to improve my batting skills.”
