LAHORE: Scottish women’s cricket team leg-spinner Abtaha Maqsood has described her return to Pakistan as a special and emotional moment. Currently in Lahore for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2025, the 25-year-old spinner is cherishing the opportunity to play in the country of her heritage.
In an exclusive interview with Geo News, Abtaha shared her joy at being back in Pakistan after eight years. “My parents are originally from Lahore. It feels amazing to be here again, especially to reconnect with relatives and play at the iconic Gaddafi Stadium,” she said.
Abtaha Maqsood has already represented Scotland in 8 ODIs and 57 T20 Internationals. Speaking about her journey into cricket, she credited her father’s passion for the game. “My dad is a huge cricket fan. I started playing with him and my brother in our garden, and that’s where my love for the game grew.”
Although she had never played in Pakistan before, Abtaha expressed how meaningful the experience has been. “Playing here is truly special for me,” she added.
When asked about her role models, Abtaha named legendary Australian spinner Shane Warne as one of her biggest inspirations. “I watch a lot of Shane Warne’s videos. I’m also a huge fan of Imran Khan—he is a role model for me and my family,” she said.
Looking ahead, Abtaha stated that her primary goal is to help Scotland qualify for the ICC Women’s World Cup. “That’s why we’re here—we want to earn our spot and play in another World Cup.”
She also praised Pakistan’s current cricket stars, naming Babar Azam as her favorite. “He’s a brilliant batter. I enjoy watching him play,” she concluded.
