Former New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson has emerged as a leading candidate to become the next head coach of the Pakistan national cricket team, replacing interim coach Aaqib Javed.
Currently serving as the head coach of Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Hesson has reportedly been approached by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the national coaching role. This isn’t the first time the PCB has contacted him — last year, he declined due to prior commitments.
According to sources, negotiations are ongoing between Hesson and PCB officials. While Saqlain Mushtaq, a former head coach of Pakistan, was also in contention, Mike Hesson is now seen as the front-runner for the position.
The PCB appears to be leaning once again toward appointing a foreign head coach, as the pool of qualified local candidates remains limited. As per PCB’s requirements, the Level 3 coaching certification is mandatory for the role, and applications have been invited until May 4.
