Former Australian Test cricketer and well-known commentator Michael Slater has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including domestic violence.
According to Australian media, Slater admitted guilt to seven charges, some of which stem from incidents that occurred in late 2023. The case was heard in the Maroochydore District Court in Queensland, where the court was told that Slater had committed acts of domestic violence against a woman.
The court acknowledged Slater’s ongoing struggles with alcohol abuse, stating that his rehabilitation journey has not been easy. His history of substance abuse was also considered during sentencing.
Despite being handed a four-year prison term, Slater has already served over one year in custody, which will count towards his sentence.
Slater, now 54, was a prominent figure in Australian cricket during the 1990s and early 2000s. He represented Australia in 74 Test matches and 42 One Day Internationals and later transitioned into a successful career as a cricket commentator.
