Karachi Kings owner Salman Iqbal has finally shed light on the real reason behind Babar Azam’s exit from the franchise, ending long-standing speculation among fans.
Babar, who initially joined Islamabad United in the inaugural Pakistan Super League (PSL) season in 2016, became a core part of Karachi Kings from 2017 to 2022. However, ahead of the 2023 PSL season, he made a move to Peshawar Zalmi, where he currently serves as captain.
In a recent interview, Salman Iqbal disclosed that differences between Babar and the Karachi Kings management were the main reason for the parting of ways — specifically over his batting position.
“We wanted Babar to bat at number three, but he was unwilling to change his role,” Salman revealed. “Due to this disagreement, we had no choice but to release him.”
Babar Azam, 30, has consistently preferred to open the innings throughout his T20 career, whether in international matches or league cricket.
According to available stats, Babar has opened in 76 out of 90 innings in the PSL, scoring 3,103 runs at an impressive average of 47.01 and a strike rate of 129.13. His PSL record includes 28 half-centuries and 2 centuries, solidifying his reputation as one of the most reliable top-order batters in the league.
