Veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni created history in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the 43-year-old Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend became the oldest player to win a Player of the Match award in the tournament’s history.
The memorable moment came during a thrilling encounter in Lucknow, where Chennai Super Kings defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 5 wickets, registering their second victory of the season.
CSK won the toss and elected to bowl first. Lucknow set a target of 167 runs, scoring 166/7 in 20 overs. In response, Chennai chased the target successfully, thanks to a late blitz from Dhoni.
Coming in during the final overs, MS Dhoni played a crucial unbeaten knock of 26 runs off just 11 balls, including 4 boundaries and 1 six. Alongside him, Shivam Dube contributed 43 runs off 37 balls, anchoring the innings.
Dhoni’s performance wasn’t limited to batting. He also impressed behind the stumps with 2 stumpings and a run-out, showcasing his agility and game sense at 43.
For his all-around contribution, MS Dhoni was awarded the Player of the Match, making him the oldest recipient of the award in IPL history, according to Indian media.
In a humble post-match comment, Dhoni appeared surprised by the recognition, saying, “I was wondering why I was given this award. Noor bowled really well—it should’ve gone to him.”
Despite the win, CSK’s IPL 2025 campaign has been tough, with 2 victories and 5 losses in 7 matches, placing them at the bottom of the points table with 4 points.
