Indian pacer Mohammad Shami, currently playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, has reportedly received a death threat via email, with a demand for ₹10 million (1 crore INR) in extortion.
According to Indian media reports, the incident took place in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, where Shami’s brother Haseeb filed a formal complaint at the local police station. The FIR states that an individual identified as Rajput Sundar allegedly sent the threatening email to Shami.
The message explicitly stated that failure to pay the ransom would result in his assassination. Police have launched a thorough investigation considering the seriousness of the threat.
Shami has taken 6 wickets in 9 matches this IPL season at an average of 56.17 and is a key figure in Indian cricket, having previously played a crucial role in India’s Champions Trophy campaign, where he claimed 9 wickets in 5 matches.
This is not the first time a high-profile cricket personality in India has been threatened. Recently, Indian team head coach Gautam Gambhir also received a similar email threat. Reports suggest he received the threatening message after a false flag operation in Pahalgam, Kashmir. He is currently under Delhi Police security.
The seriousness of these threats against high-profile cricket personalities is deeply concerning. It’s alarming to see how easily these individuals can be targeted, despite their contributions to the sport. Shami’s performance has been commendable, and it’s unsettling that his safety is now at risk. The fact that this isn’t the first incident raises questions about the security measures in place for such figures. How effective are the authorities in preventing such threats? It’s crucial to address this issue before it escalates further. What steps are being taken to ensure the safety of our cricketing heroes? This situation demands immediate attention and action.
