Lahore— Tensions between India and Pakistan may spill onto the hockey field, as reports suggest that India is planning to block Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming Men’s Hockey Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to take place in Rajgir, India, during August and September.
The tournament serves as a qualifying event for the 2026 Hockey World Cup, making it a critical competition for all participating teams, including Pakistan, a three-time Asia Cup champion.
According to media sources, following the recent Pahalgam incident and growing diplomatic rifts between the two nations, Indian authorities have refused to grant visas to the Pakistani hockey team. This could potentially lead to Pakistan’s exclusion from the tournament.
So far, the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) has not issued any official statement on the matter. However, reports indicate that Indian officials are unwilling to accommodate the Pakistani squad at the event.
The Indian government has yet to make a formal public declaration regarding Pakistan’s participation, but behind-the-scenes efforts suggest a strategic move to sideline the Green Shirts.
Pakistan has a strong legacy in the Asia Cup, having participated in 11 out of 12 editions, more than any other team, and winning the title three times.
If the move proceeds, it could raise serious questions about the neutrality of international sporting events and the politicization of regional tournaments.
